Is remote work the new reality?
Remote work has become more and more common in the past few years, especially in the IT industry. Since the work is mostly done in front of a computer anyway, IT companies are more open than others when it comes to remote work. If you factor in the Covid 19 situation when working at the office is challenging, remote work does make a lot of sense. Obviously, there are still challenges when it comes to remote work, and you can see both the pros and cons below!
What are the advantages of remote work?
The best thing for remote workers is that they don’t have to commute every day. They can work from home, and that means spending less time to and from work. It removes a lot of stress and anxiety, and you can be on time and start working just by opening the computer.
It also saves money. There are no gas bills, no public transport tickets, and you can prepare your meal at home. Plus, remote work is more comfortable. You can set your own schedule, you can even choose where you want to work without a problem. All these things add-in and provide lots of flexibility, and the experience itself will shine more than you might imagine.
Then there’s also the fact that you can spend more time with your family and friends. You can adapt your schedule to be there for them, and you can work afterward or in the mornings. That’s all up to you, and you can still be on time with products. Remote work provides that sense of autonomy, it enables you to choose when and how to work, while also making the entire process really convenient and exciting at the same time.
Basically, remote work makes it easy for you to improve your health, it also offers a much better work-life balance. The company benefits too since they can downsize to a smaller office. Plus, the team can still deliver the same results without having to worry about missing deadlines.
What are the disadvantages of remote work?
When you work remotely, there’s not a lot of human interaction. Some people just can’t do it. In addition, a lot of remote workers end up overworking because there’s not a lot of work-life balance. You also have to realize that there are a lot of distractions, and they can make you less productive.
There are situations when you feel less motivated. Usually, the pressure from work will motivate you, but when you work remotely, you’re the one in control. For some people, remote work can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, since the remote worker doesn’t invest in an ergonomic office space.
Working at Modulout
At Modulout employees always have the ability to work remotely even before the COVID virus. Usually, employees decided to work 1 day per week from home or other remote places. The exception was always summer months when we offer the option to take vacations and extend it with remote work.
Quarantine put us on 100% remote work for almost 3 months. Our offices were closed and previous experiences helped us to establish a productive homework environment.
We are using many tools for helping us with work and keeping track of our performance. It is very important that every project contains smaller tasks. For project management, we are using the online tool Trello and GitHub for version control. The hardest part was to change meetings and especially coffee breaks 🙂 For communication, we are using Slack.
Conclusion
Is remote work the new reality? In our opinion, if you are in the IT sector you should already have an option to work remotely at least part of the time. The situation with the COVID virus left many companies unprepared and forced them to change work processes. Companies that won’t be able to adapt to the new situation most likely will find it difficult to stay on the market. If you feel these words, we can offer you help to set up work processes.
